Short Answer
Through PillSorted, weight loss treatment is available for adults with a BMI of 30 or above (or 27+ with a weight-related condition). NHS eligibility is more limited — currently requiring a BMI over 40 plus four or more related health conditions, though this is expanding.

NHS Weight Loss Treatment Eligibility
The NHS is rolling out a weight management programme in phases. The current criteria are stricter than private access:
Current NHS Criteria
- BMI over 40
- Plus four or more comorbidities (related health conditions)
The Four Comorbidities
The NHS programme looks for conditions such as:
- Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Cardiovascular disease or risk factors
How the Programme Is Expanding
- Phase 1 (current): BMI 40+ with 4+ comorbidities (~250,000 patients)
- Future phases: Lower BMI thresholds and fewer required comorbidities as supply and capacity increase
- The goal is to eventually support approximately 3.5 million people across the UK
These criteria are updated regularly — speak to your GP for the latest information.
What Does BMI Over 40 Mean?
For reference, based on average UK heights:
- A woman of average height (5’4” / 163 cm) would have a BMI over 40 at approximately 17 stone (108 kg)
- A man of average height (5’9” / 175 cm) would have a BMI over 40 at approximately 19 stone (121 kg)
