Short Answer
Pregnancy cravings and food aversions are caused by hormonal changes, particularly rising levels of hCG, oestrogen, and progesterone. They're very common, especially in the first trimester, and usually nothing to worry about.

What Causes Cravings?
During pregnancy, your body goes through significant hormonal shifts that affect your senses of taste and smell. This can make you suddenly want foods you never liked before — or feel revolted by your favourite meal.
Common triggers include:
- hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) — peaks in the first trimester and heightens your sense of smell
- Oestrogen and progesterone — alter taste perception and appetite signals
- Nutritional needs — some cravings may reflect what your body needs (like craving red meat when iron is low)
Common Cravings and Aversions
Common cravings: salty foods, citrus fruits, ice cream, pickles, spicy food, chocolate.
Common aversions: coffee, meat, eggs, strong-smelling foods, garlic.
When to Be Cautious
- Pica — if you crave non-food items (ice, chalk, soil), speak to your midwife as this may indicate an iron deficiency
- Food safety — avoid raw or undercooked meats, unpasteurised cheese, and raw eggs even if you crave them
- Balance — it's fine to indulge cravings occasionally, but try to maintain a varied, nutritious diet overall
Tips for Managing Cravings
- Eat regular, balanced meals to keep blood sugar stable.
- Keep healthy snacks to hand for when cravings hit.
- Stay hydrated — thirst is sometimes mistaken for a craving.
- If a food aversion is affecting your nutrition, speak to your midwife about alternatives.
