Short Answer
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats caused by menopause. It works by replacing the oestrogen your body is no longer producing. Most women can use HRT safely, and it can make a significant difference to quality of life.

How Does HRT Help?
Hot flushes and night sweats happen because falling oestrogen levels affect the part of your brain that controls temperature. HRT restores oestrogen levels, which:
- Reduces the frequency and severity of hot flushes
- Improves sleep disrupted by night sweats
- Can also help with mood changes, brain fog, and joint pain
- Protects bones and may reduce cardiovascular risk when started early
Types of HRT
- Oestrogen-only HRT — for women who have had a hysterectomy
- Combined HRT (oestrogen + progesterone) — for women who still have their womb, to protect the womb lining
HRT comes in different forms including patches, gels, tablets, and sprays. Your GP will help you find the right type and dose.
Is HRT Safe?
For most women, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks, especially when started under 60 or within 10 years of menopause. Your GP will assess your individual risk factors, including family history and medical conditions.
What to Expect
- Improvements are often noticeable within a few weeks
- It may take 2–3 months to feel the full benefit
- Some women experience mild side effects initially (breast tenderness, bloating) which usually settle
- Regular reviews with your GP ensure the dose remains right for you
Non-HRT Options
If HRT isn't suitable for you, other options include:
- Lifestyle changes (layered clothing, cool environment, regular exercise)
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for managing hot flushes
- Certain non-hormonal medications — speak to your GP
